At The Kitchen Yea, we will replicate the Alex Makes Meals food-relief model, producing nutritious, wholesome, home-style meals, and providing critical support for regional communities across Murrindindi and Mitchell Shires.
But this space is also about connection.
It will be somewhere for people to come together to cook, learn and grow — to share skills and stories, as well as food.
The Kitchen Yea brings:
- A purpose-built community kitchen and garden.
- Chef-led cooking sessions.
- Meals delivered to local food-relief partners.
- Practical skills-building and food literacy.
- Space for connection and conversation.
- A breakfast and after-school program for local children and teens.
- Food relief and backup power during emergencies.

A renewed vision for Alex Makes Meals
Alex Makes Meals is a food-relief organisation that has been operating in Melbourne since 2020. We cook meals in bulk and deliver them to partner organisations who then distribute them within their communities.
This model means we get food to the people who need it through services that also offer broader support.
We know the impact of a meal goes far beyond the food itself. It can create a point of connection and restore a baseline of health. It can give someone the energy to take their next step, whatever that may be.
The Kitchen Yea represents an expansion of that philosophy.
We will create impact in three key ways:
1. People in the community will be invited to take part in cooking sessions, or to help tend our food gardens. You’ll learn practical kitchen skills, contribute to food relief for the broader community, and take some food home to enjoy.
2. Food produced in the kitchen will be distributed via community partnerships, reaching as many people as possible through the tried-and-tested Alex Makes Meals model.
3. We will have capacity and storage to support food relief for the community during bushfires, floods and other emergencies.
